The Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute employs a diverse range of faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students. The institute also supports many post-graduate research affiliates. The major focus areas of HNEI’s research and development activities are alternative fuels, grid integration and renewable power generation, electrochemical power systems, advanced materials, energy efficiency and transportation, and energy policy and analysis. Within each of these areas, our faculty and staff conducts research, analysis, evaluation, and testing in various fields, such as biomass processing, hydrogen production and storage, ocean and wave energy, photovoltaic technology, and energy management.

The availability of positions within our institute usually vary and are dependent our faculty’s needs within their specific project areas at a given time. International applicants are always welcome to apply, however, they will need to provide the appropriate documentation to work in the United States if they are selected.

Application Procedures

The procedures for each vacancy within our institute is specific to the corresponding position. Please view the specific announcement on our Vacancies page for detailed instructions regarding the applying for the open position.  Many positions will require you to apply via the University’s career portal: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/hawaiiedu.

Generally, those interested in applying for faculty research and post-graduate positions are asked to submit their curriculum vitae (CV), a statement of their research interests, a sample of first-author publication in the relevant field, and a list of work-related references.

For those applying for an Administrative, Professional, or Technical (APT) position, our institute typically asks that the applicant submit a cover letter indicating how you satisfy the minimum and desirable qualifications of the position, a resume, and a list of references,.

The applicant selected to fill a vacancy will be required to submit their official transcripts to the address indicated. Transcripts must have the official seal of and mailed directly from the degree-granting institution. Appointments to positions are subject to University of Hawai‘i recruitment policies and procedures and collective bargaining agreements. Employment is contingent upon satisfying employment eligibility verification requirements of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
