Student Internships

College should be more than books and exams. College should be about learning and opportunity. You can enjoy that opportunity to learn at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute. We’re always looking for bright, energetic, resourceful interns to help with our energy-related research and development projects. You’d have an opportunity to work alongside some top engineers and researchers in the field, while also broadening your classroom knowledge and professional skills.

The internship program at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute is designed for students who have earned a Bachelor's degree or advanced degree. Internships provide an opportunity for students to obtain to gain valuable experience and skills in their field of study; apply what they’ve learned to further their careers; and explore a field of study to see if it fits into their career plans.

Internships are available year round and may be full-time or part-time. Internships are normally unpaid, however, depending on the nature of research activities, a financial stipend may be offered. Academic credits will not be awarded by the University of Hawaii. However, if you are from another educational institution, you may earn credits from your home institution. Please refer to your institution’s curriculum requirements.

There are formal established criteria for application consideration:

  1. Students must have a Bachelor's degree or higher, and provide evidence of such degree.

  2. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA (based on a scale of 0-4 rating);

  3. Fluency in reading, writing and verbal communication skills in English*;

  4. If you are considered for an internship, two letters of recommendation will be required (at minimum), one preferably from a professor in your field of study.

*Evidence of English Language Proficiency: if your native language is not English, you must submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Modules test results from the test taken within the last two years.
