Energy Neutral Test Platforms: The HNEI is leading this study, in collaboration the Office of Naval Research to analyze the performance of these energy systems. HNEI has deployed three pre-engineered test platforms, created by California-based Project Frog, Inc., that incorporate passive design elements to decrease energy demand and use photovoltaic systems to feed renewable energy to the structure. The design reduces energy consumption, construction waste and operating expense, while providing spaces that are adaptable for a variety of uses. Two of the platforms are deployed on Kauai and one on Oahu. Off-Grid Net Zero Energy Visitor Center: In collaboration with Anderson Anderson, a San Francisco based architecture firm, HNEI is deploying a turn-key, off-grid Net Zero Energy Visitors Center for the NPS in Volcano National Park on the Big Island. This structure will demonstrate performance of advance building design and state-of-the art energy technologies including photovoltaic solar energy, advanced lighting, and energy storage for off-grid applications.
