HNEI has research facilities dedicated to biochemical engineering. Equipment includes a 2-liter bioreactor and 10-liter three-phase anaerobic digester complete with full process controls. The laboratory facility is a Class II fermentation facility with supporting equipment (autoclaves, biosafety cabinets, incubators, thermal reactors, micro and centrifuges, cell disrupters, membrane filtration systems, and freeze-dryers). Advanced instrumention includes HPLC with IR detector, GM with TCD detector, ISS Photon Counting Spectrophotometer, mid-range FTIR, UV/VIS spectrophotometers, gel electrophoresis, Keyence 3D high resolution laser scanning microscopy, and various optical microscopes with heating plates, cameras, and fluorescent lenses. Wet chemistry instruments used for measurement of liquid phase metabolites include HACH reactor systems for wastewater analysis, parametic and infrared gas analyzers for gas phase O2 and CO2.
