Kanoa joined the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) in August 2014 as a Power System Engineer. Prior to joining HNEI, he was with the Hawaiian Electric Company for nearly 6 years with most of his time serving as a Distribution Planning Engineer. Kanoa managed and forecasted load on the electrical subtransmission and distribution system to plan for future growth and system upgrades. He also reviewed photo voltaic (PV) interconnection applications and performed preliminary screenings to determine if the PV system will be able to interconnect to the utility grid without an extensive interconnection requirement study (IRS). His career at Hawaiian Electric Company also included a position as a Protection Engineer. While in Protection he conducted protection coordination studies, reviewed relay event reports for system faults, and provided settings for both relay upgrades and new installations. Kanoa is also a licensed professional electrical engineer in Hawaii. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawaii.
