HNEI has been collaborating on marine methane hydrate R&D with the Navy Research Laboratory (NRL), through funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR). NRL has been the lead on field investigations, while HNEI has focused on associated laboratory and modeling studies). To date, HNEI has examined methane recovery from hydrates; in situ subsea power generation systems using seafloor methane; environmental implications of methane hydrate exploitation; and engineering applications for hydrates. In addition, with encouragement from ONR Global, we have pursued and promoted international collaborations on methane hydrate R&D. See the Overview section below for details on the importance of methane hydrates and associated research on this subject at HNEI.
