HNEI has long been an important part of the University of Hawaii System's focus on sustainable and resilience.  At the University of Hawaii's Board of Regents meeting, the renewal of this initiative featured a video featured HNEI researchers, Leon Roose and Patrick Cross.

HNEI Research Featured on Energies Cover

Research supported by the Office of Naval Research and conducted by HNEI researchers, led by Matthieu Dubarry, is featured on the Energies journal cover.  This research paper "Intrinsic Variability in the Degradation of a Batch of Commercial 18650 Lithium-Ion Cells" is included in the journal's May 2018 issue and is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/en11051031.

Lithium-ion battery manufacturing is a multi-step process involving synthesis, mixing, casting, calendering, winding, soldering, packaging, wetting and sealing. Each step has a small intrinsic variability which contributes to initial cell-to-cell performance variations, but can also affect durability. This study quantified these impacts and determined that: (1) durability was not correlated with the initial cell-to-cell variations; and (2) cell-to-cell variations increased dramatically with cycling.

HNEI's Work Regarding Net Zero Energy Buildings in Hawaii

Jim Maskrey, HNEI Assistant Specialist, spoke with our project partner, MKThink, about HNEI's research activities and work regarding net zero energy buildings in Hawai'i.  This project delivered the installation of three high efficiency, energy neutral research platforms in two schools in Hawai‘i.  The platforms are designed to maximize natural ventilation, minimize heat gain, utilize natural daylighting while providing a comfortable interior environment.

Maui Energy Conference 2018 March 2, 2018

HNEI at the Maui Energy Conference 2018

HNEI Director, Richard Rocheleau, and faculty member Jennifer Potter are participating and speaking at this year's Maui Energy Conference + Exhibition on March 14-15.  Ms. Potter will be moderating the "Carbon and Energy Efficiency: What Is The Connection?" panel, while Dr. Rocheleau will be speaking in the moderated discussion "Is Hawaii’s 100% RPS Worth The Cost?"

The theme for this year's Maui Energy Conference is Decarbonization: A Business Opportunity for Innovative Communities.  The conference, which is sponsored by HNEI, will focus on exploring "possibilities including: voluntary and mandatory options for reducing carbon; what a decarbonized grid looks like; the utility business model best suited to reach carbon reduction goals; curtailing carbon emissions in the transportation sector; the role of agriculture in a carbon reduction strategy; and more."

HIDOE Thermal Comfort Portal January 25, 2018

HNEI Partners with HIDOE to Create Thermal Comfort Portal

The DOE Thermal Comfort Portal is a research tool developed for State of Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) to implement their heat abatement program: (http://hnei.hidoe-thermal-comfort.4dapt.com). The Thermal Comfort Portal as a research resource for microclimatic data across Hawaii as well as specific building performance of the public schools.  In addition to providing data for current users, the intent is to broaden the program participants to include the sustainable design community, who can contribute to solutions but who are currently outside of the specific scope of HIDOE heat abatement program.  Under this project, the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) is provide the HIDOE with the technical resources and expertise to support the delivery of energy and weather data that enables researchers, the community and design professionals to make data-driven decisions for designs and resource allocation.

This work and the portal allows HIDOE to 1) provide access to local weather data to help schools with short-term decisions related to weather, 2) provide community members access to data on local micro-climates at school campuses allowing for further study, 3) identify areas that have consistent heat issues for targeted thermal comfort improvements by providing relevant outdoor and indoor temperature readings, and 4) provide detailed information from classrooms that help architects and planners design heat abatement solutions to address the specific issues for particular buildings.

HNEI Faculty Speaks with PBS About Wave Energy

HNEI Specialist Patrick Cross spoke with PBS News Hour regarding HNEI's research in wave generated energy at the U.S. Navy's wave energy test site (WETS).  The interview overviews the wave energy conversion devices that are currently being tested at WETS.  This test site is the only wave energy testing site in the country connected to an electricity grid.  Additionally, many researchers note that if devices are able to start generating a meaningful amount of electricity, due to the greater consistency of waves, wave energy could be a more reliable source than wind or solar energy.  The video interview and its transcript is available at https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/scientists-work-to-harness-power-from-....

Maui Energy Conference March 22, 2017

HNEI Director & Faculty at the Maui Energy Conference

HNEI Director, Richard Rocheleau, and faculty members James "Jay" Griffin, Leon Roose, and Mark Glick are participating and speaking at this year's Maui Energy Conference on March 22-24.  They will be speaking in multiple panels regarding energy resilience and sustainability, recent HNEI-led grid projects and studies, and transportation innovations.

The theme for this year's Maui Energy Conference is All Things Energy: Pursuing New Opportunities for Electricity and Beyond.  The conference, which is sponsored by HNEI, will focus on "Hawaii’s transition to a clean energy economy is on its way. The focus of this year’s Maui Energy Conference explores new and innovative pathways to a vibrant and clean energy future."

HNEI Faculty Member, Dr. Trevor Morgan, Co-Authors Book

HNEI Assistant Researcher, Dr. Trevor Morgan, co-authored the book Solid Fuels and Heavy Hydrocarbon Liquids: Thermal Characterization and Analysis, Second Edition.

The publisher, Elsevier, states that this book "integrates the developments that have taken place since publication of the first edition in 2006.  This updated material includes new insights that help unify the thermochemical reactions of biomass and coal, as well as new developments in analytical techniques, including new applications in size exclusion chromatography, several mass spectrometric techniques, and new applications of nuclear magnetic spectroscopy to the characterization of heavy hydrocarbon liquids."
