Monitoring, Instrumentation and Validation

HNEI continues to expand its instrumentation, monitoring and testing of buildings and technologies to assess performance, validate predictive models, and identify options for improving comfort and efficiency. 

 

Energy Savings Retrofit

Approximately 42% of all energy in the US is consumed by buildings.  Approximately 70% of all electricity in the US is consumed by buildings.  HNEI is exploring technologies, identifying policies and supporting local implementation of best practices for deep energy retrofits, with the goal of demonstrating successful applications of the technologies and principles that can be applied across the State of Hawaii and the Pacific Region. 

 

Advanced Building Research Platforms

Building energy modeling (BEM) can be used in an integrated design process to make informed decisions on building shape, envelope design, and systems selections.  Design alternatives that affect thermal comfort and energy efficiency can be explored and optimized providing building owners, developers, architects and operating engineers options that include HVAC systems, natural ventilation strategies, daylighting techniques and glazing selection.

 

Building Simulation and Energy Modeling

HNEI is leading an effort to introduce and transfer building energy modeling (BEM) skills to the design community in Hawaii and the Asia Pacific region through academic coursework, workshops and applied building science research. In the future, design professionals will come to rely upon BEM to demonstrate compliance with building energy codes, and to cost-effectively explore sustainable design alternatives.

 

Small Scale Wind

In collaboration with the Golden Gate Park Conservancy, HNEI has deployed five small scale (1 kW) vertical axis wind turbines that are being monitored to evaluate performance for distributed applications.  This work, conducted at Crissy Field Center, an environmental education center for youth located in San Francisco includes development of a web-based dashboard that monitors all of the sustainable features of the building: energy flow in and out by end-use, water, comfort and weather.
