Steve Auerbach joined the Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) in 2024 as a Faculty Specialist, bringing his extensive experience in innovation and entrepreneurship to the institute. In his role, Auerbach focuses on innovation and the development of renewable energy ventures.

Prior to joining HNEI, Auerbach served as the Interim Director of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization and Chief Innovation Officer at UH Ventures, overseeing key initiatives across the University of Hawai‘i System. His responsibilities included managing the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) and the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programs.

Auerbach’s portfolio also encompassed UH Ventures, the Pacific Business Center, the Hawai‘i MBDA Business Center, and the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) partnership. In this multifaceted role, he championed new venture creation and fostered long-term public-private partnerships through sponsored research, corporate alliances, and collaborative opportunities. His leadership was instrumental in cultivating a community-based innovation ecosystem that bridged academic research with commercial applications, thereby supporting the university’s mission to drive economic growth and technological advancement in Hawai‘i.

Auerbach’s experience extends beyond academia. Before returning home to Hawai‘i, Auerbach spent 20 years with Hewlett Packard Corporation (HP), where he held various Senior Executive positions. His roles spanned Educational Services, R&D, Product Marketing, Business Development, and Global Business Unit Management. His last position at HP was leading the $380M Accessories and Internet Services global research and development business unit in San Diego, California, focusing on incubating, launching, and commercializing innovative products and services.

Auerbach’s commitment to innovation and community development is evident in his board memberships and advisory roles. He serves on the board of the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum at Pearl Harbor and has co-chaired CyberHawai‘i’s education and workforce development committee. He has also served on Waipahu High School’s Academy of Industrial and Engineering Technology advisory board and as an entrepreneur in residence for CONNECT – Springboard San Diego’s business creation program.

Auerbach’s educational background is rooted in Hawai‘i, having earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
